Our Story
Our family began raising beef on our family farm in 2003. Like most farmers at the time, we raised a commercial cow-calf operation. Caring for our calf crop each year and selling them after weaning was the rule of the day. Frustratingly, we never saw the fruits of our labor. Each year, our calves would leave the farm, and we would start over. After a decade, we realized that this was not sustainable. We needed to change.
After lots of research and visiting with other ranchers and farmers, we made a conscious decision to convert our operation to a grass-fed and finished farm. To do so, we needed to change nearly everything we were doing. We began by handpicking cows and heifers that would do well in a grass-finishing operation.
First, we looked for smaller-framed cattle. Cattle that would finish at 1150 pounds. Second, we looked for breeds that would work well and would taste great. We ended up with a good mix of cross-bred cattle that provided the right combination for steady growth on grass and good marbling in the steaks.
My wife Heather, my two daughters Mazie and Emmie, all take part in the raising and caring for our cattle (as well as the rest of the animals on the farm).
We hope you will enjoy eating our beef as much as we enjoy raising them.
The Ranch
The ranch is located near Jefferson City, Missouri in the heart of traditional cattle county just north of the Lake of the Ozarks and the Ozark mountains in southern Moniteau County. The county itself, was derived from the Indian word Manitou, meaning Great Spirit.
At the heart of the ranch is a large spring that feeds a rock lined creek that ensures that all of nature always has something to drink. Deer, rabbits, quail, turkey, bobcats all drink from the same water. The soil is good and the oak and walnut trees provide lots of shade for the cows.
Over the years, we have restored many of the areas to traditional prairies with native grasses and wildflowers and hardwood glades and forested areas.
We work hard to co-exist with nature and provide diversity on the ranch. The diversity is good for the soil and the cattle.
The Beef
Carefully selected, our cattle are specifically chosen for their grass-finishing potential. Small in frame and genetically predisposed to marble without corn in feedlot conditions our herd is unique and critical to making sure the end-product is tender and tasty.
Moreover, the grass-finished beef provide lots of health benefits that people desire but have a hard time finding. I’m not an expert, but there is a lot of literature on such benefits and I have provided several links for those who want more evidence or information. All of our beef at MSR is hormone, antibiotic and grain free.
We sell our beef straight from the ranch. When we receive your payment, we will arrange a date for delivery of the beef to a USDA-inspected facility for processing. Once the beef is delivered, the beef will be processed and aged for at least 14 days to ensure tenderness. We then ship or deliver the beef boxes directly to your home!
